Johannesburg is a vibrant sprawling city, one of the most modern and prosperous cities in South Africa. Home to more than four million people, Joburg or Jozi as some prefer to call it, is a major transit point for connecting flights to Cape Town, Durban, and the Kruger National Park, one of the largest game reserves in Africa. Growth has largely been based on the discovery of gold and the expanded gold and diamond trade, which also made the city known as Africa’s City of Gold.

The city has several museums such as the Apartheid Museum and the Museum Africa. The Johannesburg Art Gallery, located in Joubert Park in the central business district, consists of 15 exhibition halls and sculpture gardens. It houses collections of 20th-Century local and international art and works dating as far back as the 15th Century, including a variety of 17th-Century Dutch paintings, 18th and 19th-Century British and European art, and 19th-Century South African works.

There are many craft markets in Johannesburg and the surrounding areas, where one can get beautifully crafted beadwork and wirework. Johannesburg's environs offer various options to visitors wishing to view wildlife. The Johannesburg Zoo is one of the largest in South Africa. The Lion Park nature reserve, near Lanseria, is home to over 80 lions and various other game, while the Krugersdorp Nature Reserve, a 1,500-hecatre Game Reserve, is just a 40-minute drive from the city center.

One of the city's most affluent suburbs, Sandton, is an important business centre. It is home to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, a number of large financial institutions and the largest shopping centre in South Africa.
