Corfu
Corfu, one of the most elegant and beautiful islands in all of the Mediterranean, lies in the northern Ionian Sea between mainland Greece and Italy. The capital of the island, also called Corfu, is an aesthetic blend of Venice and Naples with French and English influences. Tall, charming Venetian-style houses with shutters and narrow balconies, cobblestone side streets, and long arcades with chandeliers and lanterns make Corfu a popular tourist destination and among the most romantic locations in Greece.
Until the 20th century, many European royalty chose Corfu as their summer residence. Elizabeth of Austria built the famed Achilleon Palace which was later purchased by the Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. Today, the island continues to attract the international elite: the Rothschild and Agnelli families own beautiful homes and Russian oligarchs frequently purchase stunning properties.
In 2007, the historic city was designated for the UNESCO World Heritage List.Corfu's rich past is filled with epic battles and sieges, as evidenced by the many castles strategically located across the island. Two of these castles enclose Corfu Town which has officially been declared a ‘kastropolis’ or fortress town. Corfu was long controlled by Venice before falling under British rule and eventually uniting with Greece in 1864.
The natural beauty of the island is spectacular with dramatic mountains, idyllic bays with sandy beaches and turquoise water, and thick groves of olive and cypress trees. Corfu is easily accessed from Athens and most European cities by plane while regular boat services connect it with mainland Greece and the other islands of the Ionian Sea.
