Amber Coast

The Dominican Republic is a tropical island filled with beautiful places. Every corner of this country boasts a different kind of natural magnificence.

The Amber Coast, named for the rich deposits of lustrous semiprecious amber found throughout the region, runs along the northern Atlantic coast from Cofresi to Nagua and boasts an assortment of seaside towns and resorts. Among this Coast’s top destinations are Puerto Plata, Cabarete, Sea-Horse Ranch, Playa Grande, and Cabrera.

Like any part of Dominican Republic, the Amber & Emerald Coast abounds with all the ecological richness that Mother Earth can provide. The region is blessed with stunning beaches and is considered a prime beach destination for tourists wanting to experience the perfect summer holiday.

If there is one constant to be found throughout the area, it is amber. This semiprecious jewel is actually a type of tree resin native to the area that has hardened over the millennia. When extracted, the result is an earthy, romantic stone ranging in color from vivid yellow to a more opaque burnt orange.

The Amber Coast is the traditional center of the Dominican tourism industry. Forests, mountains, and miles of golden beach provide a playground for adventurous sports enthusiasts with such activities as mountain biking and horse riding available, as well as a host of watersports like diving, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.

The Amber & Emerald Coast has an Edenic quality, with remote areas containing pristine beaches and rich, tropical vegetation that grows up hillsides to rocky cliffs. Cabrera is a new hot spot, and is helping to redefine the Dominican vacation with its upscale rental villas. In addition, visitors are now beginning to discover the glorious, often-unpopulated beaches between Rio San Juan and Cabrera.

The port city of Puerta Plata is the region's capital and the main tourism enclave. On the outskirts of Puerto Plata is the major Playa Dorada complex of low-rise hotels, surrounded by a country club setting of gardens and beautiful beaches and centered on the 18-hole Robert Trent Jones–designed golf course. Seaside towns and communities that are also popular with visitors include Sosua and Cabarete to the east of Puerto Plata, and Cofresi to the west.

Within a 45- to 90-minute drive from the international airport in Puerto Plata, communities such as Cabarete, Sea Horse Ranch, and Playa Grande are fast becoming the darlings of the Dominican Republic. To the west, there is a varied mix of intriguing and beach towns, where amber resin and windsurfing are just two of the region’s signature attractions.

Cabarete
Cabarete is a small, laid-back Caribbean beach village located only 20 minutes from the Puerto Plata International Airport on the country’s northern shore. This perfect tropical vacation spot exudes a charming, hip ambience and offers a combination of relaxed and adventurous lifestyles. Most visitors can barely resist the spontaneous temptation to extending their stay and just hang around the place for a while, or even move here permanently.

Cabarete is also an ideal place to just lay back to work on that perfect tan. It's the best thing to do when you're not out gliding over warm Caribbean waters or participating in adventure sports such as mountain biking, scuba diving, wakeboarding, or cascading.

Sea Horse Ranch
Sea Horse Ranch is a distinctive oceanfront villa resort on the north coast, highly sought-after by discriminating buyers and enveloped in a setting that is among the Caribbean's best.

This extraordinary gated community was designed by the award-winning architects of Edward Durrell Stone Associates, with an emphasis on luxurious living that is private, quiet, and independent.

With homesites for building, villas for sale, and vacation or long term rental properties, Sea Horse Ranch was developed with a master plan that highlights and preserves the natural environment, which encompasses more than 250 lush acres of inspiring terrain.

Playa Grande
The Playa Grande–Cabrera area, beginning approximately 120 kilometers east of Puerto Plata, has become increasingly popular for two reasons: its spectacularly unspoiled white powder-sand beach and the incredible Robert Trent Jones–designed 18-hole golf course. Many visitors to this area stay in Cabrera, located approximately five kilometers east of Playa Grande. This coastal area offers some of the most desirable private villas in the country, with unbelievable ocean views. Playa Grande Beach was rated as “one of the top 10 most-beautiful beaches in the world” by Condé Nast travel magazine. Along with the soft powdery sand, the beach is lined with tall coconut palms and bordered on each side by rugged coral formations and cliffs. The big waves that characterize this area make it a popular spot for surfing and body or boogie boarding.

Playa Grande Golf Course was Robert Trent Jones' last course, and some consider it one of his best. Its rustic setting stretches over five miles of coastline, perched above seaside cliffs and surrounded by forests and farms with natural springs flowing throughout. The hilly landscape provides natural undulations that are ideal for golf. Jones included his signature leaf-shaped bunkers, along with wide fairways and large, steeply sloped greens. Over half of Playa Grande's holes play right along 100-foot bluffs above the ocean, providing an exciting game as well as oceanfront views. Golfers have dubbed it the Pebble Beach of the Caribbean.

Cabrera
The small town of Cabrera is situated at the western extreme of the Bahía Escocesa between Nagua and Rio San Juan. Considered one of the most beautiful places in all of the Dominican Republic, Cabrera has natural attractions including magnificent beaches such as El Diamante, El Caleton de Dario, and the Playa Grande. This special town, largely untouched by the tourism industry, is home to some of the most luxurious villas in the Dominican Republic.
