Huntsville, Ontario – Fiddlehead Mountain offers ski enthusiasts a truly unique opportunity: Your own ski hill, ultimately private and completely devoid of crowds. Formerly known as Steven’s Hill, once a popular alpine skiing destination for elementary school students and Olympic athletes alike, decades of neglect took its toll. The 123-acre property was overgrown with trees and scrub when Rob Birch and Francine Goulet bought it 15 years ago. Ms. Goulet remembers well how they came to acquire the property. “We were still dating and Rob said, ‘Let me show you the spot where I learned to ski as a kid.’” A For Sale sign greeted them.

With the deal sealed, Birch, his brother and Goulet pulled on gloves, revved up the chainsaws and got to work. The new owners slowly carved the original runs back into the hill. Now, five runs and two backcountry trails are etched into the landscape, just as they were more than 70 years ago yet with a modern twist – the runs are serviced by a T-bar lift with all new electronics as of 2011 and Canadian Safety Certified. One of the runs is lighted for nighttime skiing.

The couple also constructed a new chalet residence, located mid-mountain and affording sweeping views of the wooded valley below. The chalet features 2,640 square feet of light-filled mountain elegance, including a gourmet kitchen, five bedrooms, and a fully equipped lower level suite of rooms complete with kitchenette and a small wine cellar. A grand Muskoka room has soaring cathedral ceilings lined elegantly in natural pine and opens to a private deck. A generous wrap-around terrace provides easy access to outdoor relaxation and incredible views, and overlooks the pool.

The property is further appointed with a warming hut at the base of the lift and a covered gazebo with a steel fire pit for après ski entertaining. Included in the purchase is a small Zamboni to transform the large pond into a hockey rink, the Sno-Cat to keep the ski runs groomed and a Bush Hog to mow in summer when hiking and mountain biking beckon.
