Historic Charles Ogden Mansion off Fifth Avenue Gold Coast Now on the Market for $48.5 Million

A piece of New York City history, the seven-story townhouse commands the only unobstructed single block of Fifth Avenue’s Upper East Side section

NEW YORK, NY – Positioned on a magnificent mansion block just off the Fifth Avenue Gold Coast, The Charles Ogden Mansion—at 12 East 79th Street— is now being globally marketed by Christie’s International Real Estate, the world’s leading luxury real estate network. Offered at U.S. $48,500,000 by affiliate Brown Harris Stevens, the historic residence presents incomparable prominence and location.

As the result of deeded height restrictions that continue today, The Charles Ogden Mansion enjoys an incredible advantage, as it is located on the only single block of the Upper East Side section of Fifth Avenue without the obstruction of an apartment building in excess of six levels. This elegant block boasts mansions by noted fixtures in American architecture including Stanford White, Charles Pierrepont Henry (C.P.H.) Gilbert and Warren and Wetmore.

Between 1901 and 1903, architectural firm Little & Browne designed the property at 12 East 79th Street for Mary F. Ogden. The adjacent 14 East 79th Street was built for her brother, Charles W. Ogden, who was noted in the real estate industry and held the titles for both properties until his passing in 1935. At this point, the deed for 12 East was transferred to Mary with the restriction that it only be used as a private residence.

Characterized by its bowed bay, The Charles Ogden Mansion features brick and limestone facades. Iron fencing, opens urns and broad low stoops provide a gracious entryway above and two practical service entries on the lower level. Roman brick walls on the upper floors feature limestone trim.

Encompassing approximately 16,000 square feet dispersed throughout seven levels, the mansion presents a main staircase, service staircase and elevator. Each floor features a grand center landing that joins the oversized front and rear rooms. Two additional floors above the balustrade were added to the structure in 1960.

“The Charles Ogden Mansion is revered for its unique and privileged location and exquisite design,” said Kathy Coumou, Senior Vice President, Northeast Regional Manager for Christie’s International Real Estate. “The sale of this home presents an opportunity to own a true piece of New York history.”

Positioned approximately 125 feet from Fifth Avenue, the mansion is an impressive 28 feet wide with an extension built to the full 102-foot depth on its lot. The lowest level of the residence features front and back windows and two separate entries to East 79th Street. The residence has been in the same ownership since 1975, and is currently configured for institutional use. However, the original rooms in the front and rear of the home remain open and intact, allowing for the new owner to take full advantage of the 28-foot width in many of the main rooms.

"Truly a home for the ages, the property allows for a delightful balance of historic distinction and modern conveniences, with endless living space and options to customize within one of New York’s most prized locations,” said Paula Del Nunzio, the listing agent with Christie’s International Real Estate affiliate Brown Harris Stevens.
