Чубут
Nestled amongst the natural beauty of Patagonia, Chubut is a province in southern Argentina, located between the 42nd and 46th southern parallels of latitude.
Replete with ancient forests, volcanoes, crystal-clear lakes, and charming mountain villages, Chubut is the third largest province in the country, surpassed only by Buenos Aires and Santa Cruz. The regional economy is driven by livestock, forestry, and perhaps not surpisingly, tourism, with Los Alerces National Park and La Hoya ski resort being the most prominent attractions.
The majestic landscape that offers the treasured ancient larch forest is overwhelming. Endless trails run through the mountains, rivers, and lakes that offer a myriad of activities like horseback riding, trekking, rafting, and “yesquí” fishing.
Esquel is the largest center for services in the mountain range of Chubut and together with San Martin de los Andes, Villa La Angostura, Bariloche, and El Bolson, comprise a regional unit called "Patagonian Lakes Route.” The town dates to the arrival of Welsh immigrants in Chubut in 1865 and is nestled in a hollow among hills 550 meters above sea level (masl), and the slopes give the appearance of an amphitheater. Surrounding the town, the Nahuel Pan peak (2,240 masl) and the Esquel mountain range (2,145 masl) rise around highlighting the homonymous hills and La Hoya peak (2,100 masl), where the ski resort is located.
Due to a growing demand from tourists for accomodation, restaurants, and major infrastructure, Esquel has experienced remarkable change in recent decades. While continuing to provide services to the rural sector, the town is increasingly becoming a tourist hub and has a high rate of public employment primarily because many of the provincial agencies are located in the city. Esquel is easily accessible from major South American cities via the international Esquel Airport.
