キクラデス

The Cyclades in Greece make up a group of some 220 islands, forming a cycle (kyklos) on the southeast of the Aegean Sea, east of mainland Greece. The Cyclades are peaks of submerged mountainous terrain, with Santorini being an active volcanic island.

Some of the most popular islands are Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Milos, and Ios, with Syros as the capital island of the group. Delos is one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece. The excavations on the island are ongoing and are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean. South of Naxos lie the small Cyclades, consisting of five tiny beautiful unspoiled islands: Iraklia, Schinoussa, Donoussa, and Ano (upper) and Kato (lower) Koufonissi.

The main characteristic of the Cyclades is their contrasts: white cubist houses perched on steep mountainous slopes overlooking the blue sea and golden beaches, with turquoise waters reflecting the rocky peaks in the background. Their relaxed pace of life, together with a generally dry and mild climate, makes them a preferred international tourist destination. “Chora” is the capital on each island and is where most of the nightlife is concentrated with bars, tavernas, and cafés set in the maze of Cycladic alleys.

Even though these islands look alike, they vary a lot in terms of what can be found by the visitor. The more cosmopolitan ones such as Mykonos, Paros, and Santorini have become hotspots for celebrities from across the world during the summer; whereas the small Cyclades have kept tourism to a more sedate scale.

Access to the Cyclades is easy from Athens, as there is regular boat service from the capital's port Piraeus directly to almost all of them. Many of the islands also have an airport, offering frequent air links to Athens as well as direct overseas flights during the summer months.
