Στοκχόλμη

One of Europe's largest and best-preserved mediaeval city centres, Sweden’s capital city of Stockholm is built on 14 islands connected by some 50 bridges on Lake Mälaren which flows into the Baltic Sea. Some 24,000 islands and islets stretch 80 kilometers east of the city, forming Stockholm’s spectacular archipelago.

Sweden's beautiful capital has a picturesque setting with modern Scandinavian architecture and distinctive saffron- and terra-cotta-colored buildings and lots of green space. Home of the Nobel Prize, the city is a lively, cosmopolitan place, very well-known for its production of famous sleek designs.

Most attractions in Stockholm are found in what Stockholmers call "innerstaden," the inner city—historically the zone within the city tolls. The old town, Gamla Stan, is a compact maze of cobblestone streets beautifully preserved in the heart of the city, crowned by the Stockholm Palace.

Stockholm is packed with more than 100 museums, the most famous of which is the Nationalmuseum which houses Sweden's largest art collection, including 16,000 paintings and 30,000 objects of art. The collection represents a major part of Sweden's art heritage dating back to the 16th Century in the days of Gustav Vasa, and has since been expanded with more works of arts by artists such as Rembrandt and Antoine Watteau. Outside the inner city, there are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: The Royal Palace Drottningholm (within Ekerö Municipality) and the Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery).

Despite its northern location, Stockholm has relatively mild weather although the difference between seasons is quite large. The summers are sunny with mild nights, and the winters dark and sometimes snowy. During Christmas the city gets a magical ambience from the thousands of candles in the windows.
