With over 320 years of heart and loving care at its centre, Sätra Brunn has always been a place where self-care is placed ahead of all else. Today it serves as a diversified business establishment where picturesque homes, hotel, preschool, church, your own spring water source, and a bathhouse mingle to create a lively and highly appreciated milieu. During the 17th century there was a large interest in therapeutic bathing and spring water bathhouses, especially on the European continent. Urban Hjärne had visited many of these sites, and was now looking for a similar source of spring water in Sweden. The doctor Samuel Skragge who was well-read regarding the medicinal benefits of mineral water thought the spring near Sätra by was worth exploring further for its possible health benefits. Tests taken showed that the spring water was of very high quality. Skragge bought the land in 1700 and opened the establishment in 1701. Skragge couldn't finish his plans for the well as he was pulled in to the Russian campaign, but the business continued without him and a sophisticated building style began to take shape around the well over the years. As drinking spring water was to be coupled with walks in nature, a number of tree-lined avenues were planted as well as a park. In the 1740s, Bishop Kalsenius from Västerås bought the grounds and the houses, and after a few years it was bequeathed to the Uppsala Academy under whose care it was until the middle of the 20th century. Many have visited the well throughout the years and it has traditionally been financed by paying guests including aristocrats as well as commoners. During the 1930s, the well experienced a period of more stable and recurring revenues when the Swedish retirement agency (later the insurance agency) annually referred patients to the well for care and healing. Throughout the centuries the building style has changed with the times at Sätra Brunn. What has been constant, however, is Sätra Brunn's original purpose, to care and offer a recreational environment for those who are not well. The business has since the 1700s mostly been run during the warmer months of the year, but many of the houses are made of timber and offer good possibilities for heating. Some of the houses are already insulated and are used throughout the year. The current owner acquired Sätra Brunn in 2002 with a vision to preserve and develop the grounds and the business. The ownership group's watchwords in the development process have been 'healing,' 'learning,' and 'creation.' The business is alive and well today, and includes restaurant and hotel, conference, bathhouse with connected spa, a fully operational preschool as well as local beverage production site. In total, the grounds include 58 hectares, of which 34 hectares comprise a separated piece of forest real estate. In addition, celebrations such as Midsummer, concerts, weddings, Christmas, and New Years' are recurring and very appreciated events on the grounds. The turnover for the business is approximately 30-34 million SEK per year (2019).
